Grades and meritpoäng – university studies in Sweden

When you apply for a college or university after high school, the different programs have different admission limits. These are based on the average grade required to enter the program or course.

You use your average grade, or credit score, as a means of competing for a place in the program you want to study. It works as a kind of comparison figure based on the grades you have received.

The maximum credit value that can be obtained based on grades is 20.0.

Recalculating the grades of the Gymnasieexamen

After the French grades have been adjusted according to the table on the left, they are translated into Swedish letter grades on the following scale:

F=0 – 8 , E=9 – 10, D=11 – 12, C=13 – 15, B=16 – 17, A=18 – 20

Example: A student has 13.21 in English. This is transferred to 15.86, which means the grade B.

To calculate a credit value
To calculate your average grade or so-called credit score in the high school diploma, do the following:

Use the following values: F = 0, E = 10, D = 12.5, C = 15, B = 17.5 and A = 20.

To calculate your average, you must multiply each grade by the number of credits for the course you received the grade in. For example; if you got A in a course that is 100 credits, multiply 20 by 100.

You do the same thing for each course you study, to get the grade value for each individual course. Finally, you get a large sum that you then divide by the number of credits you studied during your high school years. For a full program with university admission, you must have at least 2500 credits. When you divide by the number of credits you get your credit score.

Example: if a student calculates his or her grade values with the number of high school credits he or she has studied and receives 37 500, he / she should divide this by the number of high school credits read. 37 500/2 500 = 15. This student’s credit value and average grade will therefore be 15.0.

Meritpoäng – Baccalaréat and OIB

To compensate for those who apply with Swedish high school grades and the merit points, you will receive credit points by adding points to your French grades according to the table below.

The preliminary credit value is your recalculated grade value

Preliminärt meritvärde   Meritpoängskompensation
10,00-11,99                            0,50
12,00-12,99                            0,75
13,00-13,99                            1,00
14,00-14,99                            1,25
15,00-15,99                            1,50
16,00-16,99                            1,75
17,00-17,99                            2,00
18,00-18,99                            2,25
19,00-20,00                            2,50

The credit score compensation is always added at the end, when any other additions have been made.

Meritpoäng- Gymnasieexamen

Regardless of the education you are applying for, the students at LFSL can get meritpoäng for certain courses in modern languages (French, German and Spanish) and mathematics.

In order to obtain meritpoäng , you must have received grade (E) or higher in the course. Courses required for eligibility do not give credit points.

You can get a maximum of 2.5 meritpoäng.

Extended courses can also give meritpoäng and the grade is then included in the comparative figure. If you complete with postgraduate courses afterwards, the same rules apply. If you have grades in several courses that can give
meritpoäng, the courses that give the best credit are counted.

Meritpoäng for modern languages – max 1,5 points
Modern languages 3 gives 0,5 points.
Modern languages 4 gives 1 point.
Modern languages 5 gives 0,5 points.

Meritpoäng for mathematics – max 1,5 points
If the eligibility requirement is basic eligibility, then Maths 2, 3 and 4 give half a credit each.

If the eligibility requirement is Math 2, then Math 3 and 4 give half a credit each.

If the eligibility requirement is Math 3, then Math 4 gives half a credit.

NOTE! If the eligibility requirement is Mathematics 4 then you get 0 credit points in Mathematics.
